A New Approach
To Igniting And Sustaining Creativity
NEW!
by Anne Paris, PhD
Mary squirmed in her chair as she continued, “I just don’t know what is wrong with me. Why can’t I just do it? I feel stressed all the time when I’m not writing. ‘I should be writing’, I say to myself, but I don’t. I think, if I just get the laundry done, then I’ll be free to sit down and write the next chapter. But then I don’t. Maybe I need to exercise first, and I go for a run. I get back home, fully intending to sit down at the computer. But I don’t. And all the while I’m feeling bad and stressed about not writing. What is wrong with me? Maybe I’m just lazy. Or maybe unconsciously I don’t really want to write. Or maybe it just means that I’m not really cut out to be a writer. ‘Writers write’, I tell myself.
Through thousands of hours of psychotherapy with artists, I have found that most are quite familiar with the experience of being artistically blocked, or of procrastinating and avoiding their creative work. “If only I weren't so distractible” or “I must not really want to succeed” are common complaints I’ve heard. These blocks can lead to non-productivity as well as to more serious problems such as depression and addictions.

Accessing Your
Spiritual Guidance For Healing
by Margaret Paul
Everyone in a state of healing knows that they cannot heal without a
connection with their Higher Power; yet for many, this connection is
illusive. Still, it is the birthright of each of us to have a direct line
to God, whatever God is for you. Yet few of us have learned how to do
this, at least on a daily basis. Surprisingly however, it is not hard to
do.

What Is A
Power Song And Where Do I Get One?
by Shaman Elder Maggie Wahls
Power Songs are oral prayers expressing your true self, your nature, your
individuality, your power. All cultures have power songs but you can have
your own power song too. We think of the power in a hymn or an African
chant, a Shamanic ceremony song or even in the howling of wolf. And there
is definite power in sound.
All Shamans have several power songs because the vibration of the notes in
the voice and in the fourth chakra of the throat stimulate sympathetic
vibrations in the universe to respond. Everything is connected. What you
put out comes back to you. When a butterfly flutters his wings
in Cost Rica the winds of Africa are stirred. And when a sound is offered,
the universe responds.

____________________ Gratitude: The
Secret Behind Creativity
by Nancy Marmolejo
When you think of being more creative, what comes to mind? Most people
think in terms of artistic skills, but creativity manifests itself in a
number of ways beyond the obvious. Picture creativity like a jet stream
that flows all around us: when we step up to the flow and dip our hands
in, we easily grab wonderful ideas, refreshed insights and innovative
actions. At times, things get in our way and we lose our contact
with the creative flow. We consider ourselves in a rut, not creative,
unproductive, dull.. There is a simple practice that magically
ignites the creative juices and brings joy to all parts of life. It takes
practice, commitment, and an open mind.

____________________ Enhanced Healing Through Music
by Dr. Harry Henshaw
Music has always been a very important part of our lives, from childhood to our being an adult. As a part of our experience, music can have both a physiological and psychological affect upon us as human beings. In addition to the influence that it has on our life, music also has many therapeutic qualities and has been utilized in promoting a variety of healings throughout the ages. As we know further, music can be a very powerful medium for altering our state, of changing how we actually feel. More specifically music can be very effective in producing a very deep and healing state of relaxation and in the process, reduce stress and even promote sleep. Music can also be used to assist one in improving his or her self-esteem and furthering an individual's personal growth and development, transformation.

Are You Starving Your Soul? Reclaiming Your Creativity
by Edward Toupin
The
soul is your compass, your battery, your guide, your best friend, and your
worst enemy. It is that little voice in your head and that funny feeling
in your stomach. The soul is the wild roar for a victory and the deep sob
for a loss. It is the tears of anguish and excitement. It is
everything that you could ever want to be, but just don't know it yet.
Your soul is your spirit to achieve, and be, and live beyond the wildest
dreams that are indeed within your reach.

Creativity: It's Only Human!
by Melanie Votaw
When
I was in school, the class I dreaded most was my eighth grade art class.
The teacher put down my every attempt at completing an assignment. I
simply couldn’t produce art the way she wanted it. Luckily for me, I had
already proven myself in other creative areas besides the visual arts –
such as writing and dance. Yet, that art teacher was successful in
convincing me that I had no talent whatsoever for painting, drawing, or
anything remotely related to them. Imagine my surprise when years later, I
published my nature photography and became – of all things – a
volunteer art teacher!

Stress Relief And Healing... It's Only A Sound
Away
by Gina and Mac Horwood
Let’s face it…stress is a part of every
day life and has been since man took his first step. High levels of stress
can result from a bacterial infection, when we face possible danger, a
major life change, as well as, inner conflict, worry or physical trauma.
However, research has proven that we live our entire lives in continual
low level stress. For instance, you’re probably living with low level
stress if your work requires you to meet several deadlines each week. Low
level stress can either work for us or against us as it can help us
accomplish our goals or suppress our immune system. It all depends on how
each of us thinks and perceives the world around us. Stress occurs because
our thoughts produce electrical impulses, which can be measured in both
amplitude and frequency, so that extremely emotional thoughts can
contribute much greater amplitude to the electrical energy produced by our
brain...

It Only Takes a Spark ... Pass It On
by Dan Britt
"What you do speaks so loudly that I
cannot hear what you say." - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Great inspiring people have influenced people in every area of life
throughout centuries. Henry David Thoreau, the great 19th century
transcendentalist writer, was influenced by the great Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Thoreau was the impetus for Ghandi's and Martin Luther King Jr's civil
disobedience, which ultimately changed the shape of the world for a better
humanity. Socrates taught Plato who taught Aristotle, who collectively
remain the greatest philosophical trio in history. We often stand on the
shoulders of giants. And we can notice connections such as these
throughout history--a lineage--a passing down of wisdom.

Where Dead Voices Gather

Many years ago, I wrote a book called Country.
Two of the chapters closest to its heart were devoted to the mystery of
Emmett Miller, whose startling and mesmerizing music seemed to be a
Rosetta Stone to the understanding of the mixed and mongrel bloodlines of
country and blues, of jazz and pop, of all that we know as American music.

Sourcing From The Divine
by Linda Marks
So many of us as human beings yearn to do
God's work in the world. Each of us is born with unique gifts to give to
the world if only we can recognize them, develop them and build our lives
around their expression. Creativity is really sourcing from the divine and
grounding what we receive through our hearts, bodies and minds in some
medium that can hold and emanate an essence in physical form.

If
You Can Breath, You Can Sing!
by Lyndsey Watson,
Singer/Musician
"Singing is your birth right,"
says my teacher and friend, Shawna Carol. Why, then, is it that most
of us permit singing to be appropriate only for the "talented"
and "gifted" few? How can we change this belief and allow
ourselves to tap into an immensely valuable resource for self-healing and
well-being? The only way I have found thus far is through a process
taught to me 8 years ago -- by Mary Elizabeth Wheeler and Shawna Carol --
a process of authentic singing called SpiritSong™.
My greatest challenge has been finding ways within the limitations of our
language to describe the process of SpiritSong™ and the benefits
available for everyone through practice. I have found the most
effective way to do this is to share my own experience of spirit singing
and invite others to find a teacher and/or song circle and "try it
out" for themselves.

___________________ A
Journey In Song
by Lyndsey Watson
Almost eight years ago, now, I was sitting in my cubicle at Boston College
(where I had been working as a secretary for 3 years) preparing to seal an
envelope with my application to graduate school. I was at a point in my
life when I was beginning to think there had to be more to life than
getting up, going to a job, going home, going to sleep, only to start all
over again the next day. I was thinking I should take advantage of one of
my employee benefits--free tuition. My plan was to get my masters in
Elementary Education, a natural follow-up to my undergraduate degree in
the same area of study. Why not? It was "free"; it was a natural
progression; my father would be proud of me; it was the "normal"
thing to do. Yet I had never taught children in a classroom; I didn’t
even have the desire to do so. So why was I planning to spend more years
in school to learn better ways to do something I didn’t want to do?

Flute: An interview with Rick Roberts, Native American Style Flute Maker
and Musician.
by Carol
Bedrosian
As with most magical events in life, a
series of flirtations with synchronicity brought Rick Roberts to the
door of Spirit of Change. Two months ago. Just as I typed in the last word
for a classified ad seeking an office manager, the phone rings. It's Linda
Roberts, Rick's wife, inquiring about employment. "Does Spirit of
Change, by any chance, have any office positions open?" she asks.
As
one thing lead to another, it quickly became apparent that Linda and
Rick had the combined skills necessary to navigate Spirit of Change
towards it's next level of growth. An accomplished flute player and
crafter. Rick is also a high tech expert. Through a series of computer
consultations which promptly turned into creative jam sessions, we soon
realized this connection was about more than just computers. In fact, it
seemed that Spirit of Change had been mysteriously swirling around in the
background of Rick's creative path over the last three years as he
established himself as a master craftsman and musician.

The Biology of Success
Build Mental Capital
by Robert Arnot, M.D.
Mental energy is the basic foundation of
success. Look at corporate titans such as Michael Eisner, Martha Stewart,
and Jack Welch, or world leaders such as Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair, and
Margaret Thatcher, or super moms from Maria Von Trapp to Barbara Bush.
High mental energy is what they all have or had in common. Mental energy
is the brain's power supply -- the more power you have, the longer and
harder you can work. Compare your work output the morning after taking a
red-eye to that after a refreshing night's sleep. It's brain energy that
makes the difference.

An Interview with Jimi Two
Feathers /
Co-founder of Earth Drum Council
by Carol Bedrosian
CAROL: Is there such a thing as
non-native people?
JIMI: I don't think so. The question
is native from where? Also, where do you think you are from and where do
you feel connected to? I can say I am native to Cambridge, Massachusetts,
because I've been here all my life. I look around and I see a lot of other
people that I do not consider to be native to this area. That's a judgment
on my part because I have been here for X amount of years and you have
only been here for a fraction of that. So from my perspective you are not
a native. But from your perspective you may have only been here for five
years and feel really connected — more connected than you have anywhere
else. So you feel this is where you are from because it is part of your
home. It's a matter of perspective.

Sound, Music, & Medicine
by Julianna Souza, RN, HNC, HTP.
Recently I have been delighted to observe
an increased emphasis on music and sound as a medium for healing. Perhaps
because music has been an integral part of my life I am more keenly aware
of this phenomena. On occasions when I have felt my soul inspired by a
particularly beautiful piece of music, I have realized that I would
literally wither if music were not a part of my daily life. For me, music
assumes many forms and I am as deeply touched by the musical sounds of
nature as I am by a beautiful concerto.

Myth, Music & Soulwork
by Ana Pejcinova
In one of his latest writings, Claude Levy-Strauss compared the act of
telling the myth to a choral performance: the story-teller is the
conductor, and the listeners of the myth are the singers themselves and
not the audience in the concert hall. Although we might be inclined to
think of the story teller as of the one who re-creates the myth, here it
seems that he is only the silent guide who directs the voices of the
chorus. It is the chorus, the listeners of the myth, who re-create the
content of the story: each voice interprets in his/her own way different
aspects of the myth.

Angel On My Shoulder: An
Autobiography
A Childhood Filled with Music
by Natalie Cole and Digby Diehl
Singers are often asked about their musical influences, and for someone
with a famous musician for a father, this question is one of the most
common. But when people ask me if my father sang for me as a child, they
seem disappointed by the truth: He never sang us romantic ballads like
"Mona Lisa." He sang gibberish songs that gave us kids a bad
case of the giggles, and crazy rhyme-and-sound songs, like the ones I
learned later at summer camp. These all had the kind of completely silly
lyrics that children have loved forever.

Charles and I were born at 1016 Valence. We

Auntie Cat — Aunt Espy — who was blind — and Aunt Lela. Auntie Cat,
Mrs. Virginia Harris, was the power. Her husband, Peg Harris, was a master
