When we think well of ourselves and others, we enhance various genes that deal with particular emotional responses. When we listen, for example, to another person’s opinion and genuinely look for compromise, we are strengthening the gene set of Joy & Inner Peace, which activates our authentic voice. If we are passed over for a job promotion, but continue to trust our own creativity and stay steady, we’re benefiting from the spiritual gene set of Inner Power & Presence. This gene set helps us make peace with our need to overly control people and circumstances and to feel competitive with everyone and everything that seems to be getting ahead of us. 

As we stay in our inner knowing, we are rewarded with greater trust in ourselves and belief in the truth that life is a process that involves both the fair and the unfair, the good and the not-so-good. How we interpret it—we’re not much at all, or life happens and I’m still here—determines our happiness and our health. It’s our choice moment by moment. 

Because our gene sets are linked to our way of thinking and feeling, which affects our physical body, I’ve identified the appropriate energy center or chakra for each. Many people are familiar with chakras, which are the small energy centers that rest in the energy field and are approximately aligned with our spine. These energy centers hold and sort the energy of our beliefs, attitudes, emotions, and thoughts. Everything we think moves through these small rotating energy vortexes, influencing our behavior and our health. This listing identifies the specific chakra, the corresponding gene set, what the gene is telling us about the way we’re living. Together these Spiritual Gene Sets give us a way of living in harmony with all life.


Our Seven Spiritual Gene Sets 

7th Chakra

Wisdom – activated through unity

Wisdom is the spiritual gene that helps us make choices that involve the best for ourselves and others. Rather than only considering our own needs, wisdom comes from our inner knowing that we are all connected at the level of our heart and its Divine energy. We ask to be mentored by the Universe so we may learn to care for all life as if it were personal to us. 

6th Chakra

Vision - activated through perception

Vision is the spiritual gene that asks us to acknowledge the fire of our inner knowing, which allows us to discover and acknowledge our own guidance and the vision for our life. Rather than looking for unconditional love and support only from our family or friends, we need to look for it in our own deep heart, which will never desert us. Realize that Presence is within each of us and guiding our lives. As we surrender our ego will, or our personality self, to our divine will, or our true Self, we receive the gift of Grace. Through daily guidance we are better able to realize our fullest potential for life.

5th Chakra

Joy & Inner Peace

Joy & Inner Peace is the gene set that asks us to hold the intention of our authentic self and to use this energy as encouragement for us to speak the truth, aligning our words with our actions and thoughts. We are guided to find our authentic voice when we remain congruent—with our beliefs, feelings, thoughts, words, and actions in alignment. We strive to focus our intention and give our attention to those endeavors that foster love and compassion in the world. We listen within before speaking.

4th Chakra

Love & Compassion - activated through passion

Love & Compassion is the gene set that asks us to experience love, kindness, compassion, and freedom from our woundedness. Every moment of every day involves the energy of our heart, since it is focused on bringing our love and compassion into the world. Our passion is born of compassion and enables us to nourish our body and our emotions—to help us love our partner, family, and friends more fully—and to enable us to love those far away who also need our attention.

3rd Chakra

Inner Power & Presence - activated through trust

Inner Power & Presence is the gene set that asks us to trust that to be successful we must contribute our unique gifts and abilities to make a difference with our lives. In order to develop our natural creativity so that we can contribute our best effort to the world, we learn to believe in our true Self, for it is here that we are filled with the empowerment and self-confidence to persevere where necessary and relax control where appropriate.

2nd Chakra

Intimacy & Community - activated through balance

Intimacy & Community is the gene set that invites us into balance, which is steadiness within ourselves in order to create enduring spiritual community with others. To be comfortable with the nature of life, which is change, we are asked to observe the natural world in which all seasons pass only to return again. All life is cyclical and always returning to rebirth and renewal. We’re learning to feel whole and intimate with our Spirit so we can model new cooperative relationships in the world. 

1st Chakra

Abundance - activated through manifestation

Abundance is the gene set that asks us to manifest prosperity, health, and well-being in order to have ample to share, and in return we need to receive the grace and gratitude that flows to us from others’ hearts. We create movement in the energy of abundance by staying connected to doing our best rather than focusing on outcomes. We leave the outcome to Spirit.

All the ways we treat others have implications, from how we care about the needs of our dog to how we interact with our neighbor. We are either building energy or losing it, either enhancing our energy through loving or doing the opposite. Our actions stem from either our fear or our love, our inner critic or our inner healer. Spiritual gene sets are the way that we can understand being made in God’s image.
