A Valentine’s Day Meditation on Love and Relationships  NEW!
by Mark A. Michaels (Swami Umeshanand Saraswati) and Patricia Johnson (Devi Veenanand)

Tantra is an ancient Indian spiritual tradition that recognizes human sexuality as one avenue among many for achieving mystical experience. Although the number of Tantric texts that deal directly with sexual activity is quite small, most Westerners associate Tantra with love, sex, and relationships. While Western ideas about Tantra are thus somewhat misguided, if you can bring a Tantric sensibility to love and relationship, your love life will be richer and more fulfilling.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day is controversial in 21st-century India. This is due, in part, to the rise of Hindu fundamentalism and objections to the holiday’s Christian origins. More importantly, conservative Indians view Western ideas about romantic love as alien and immoral. Arranged marriages are still very much the norm, even as India becomes a technological superpower, and in arranged marriages, love is a fringe benefit, not a necessity.

The Healing Touch NEW!
by Sandra Blakeslee and Matthew Blakeslee

Imagine lying on a therapy table as a healer places her hand under the back of your neck. Her touch is gentle, calm, tranquil. She places her other hand lightly onto your left shoulder, then onto your right shoulder.

A sensation of tingling warmth ripples through your body. A nagging pain in your lower back begins to drain away. It's not vanquished, but it fades drastically. You relax under the spell of the healer's hands.

The Benefits of Energy Healing
by Wendy De Rosa

Today, in our advanced, modern society, people take time to perform some kind of daily physical cleansing ritual. A shower or bath, teeth brushing, shaving and hair styling are all standard forms of grooming that we make time to fit into our busy lifestyles. After all, it’s good hygiene, right?  Our outward appearance is something most of us take pride in, but what about what’s going on beneath the layers of the skin?

Spiritual Awakening and the Near-death Experience
by Dr. Stephen Ruppenthal

When the mind closes down and the senses are stilled, mystics describe the sudden effulgence of pure light illuminating consciousness, accompanied by a flood of joy. After this experience, called enlightenment, illumination, or oneness with the Divine, people feel a happiness so unlike and above any other that they try to reach out to those still in the darkness we call everyday life. But enlightenment is not just for the saints, yogis and lamas who achieve it. It can come to any of us at any time-- at the time of death, in a deep and life-changing dream, or in a supreme awakening in meditation. And it is within the reach of us all. We have only to want it and ask for it. As Hamlet says, “The readiness is all.”

Power Reiki
by David Murphy, N.D., Ph.D. and Rosario Murphy, Ph.D., CHT

The human body is sustained by life force energy. This energy appears to travel through Meridian pathways inside the physical body and feed all the main organs, glands and ultimately every muscle, nerve, tissue and cell.  We are all about energy.  Energy goes by many different names but it remains the universal life-force sea in which we exist and of which we are a part. In Japan it is called Ki, in India the life-force energy is called prana.  It’s Qi (Chi) in China.

The Perception--Well-being Connection
by Kimmie Smith

Our own perception of the world and those we're personally involved with stems from our childhood. If you grew up with one or more parent(s) who displayed constant anxiety, worry, anger, etc., then you have most likely adopted that same behavior as an adult. Some people eventually recognize this in themselves and some never do. And even when the ones that do recognize this in themselves they tend to just accept that behavior as "who they are." They might try, through various methods, to rid themselves of this unwanted negative behavior only to wind up frustrated when something triggers a certain emotion and they find it hasn't really left. So they give up and just accept that this is who they are and that change is impossible. Maybe they are still hearing the message that has been given to them over a lifetime, "Oh, that's just they way you've always been, that's your personality and you'll never change." They then decide that they are comfortable this way and fear any kind of change, even if it would mean a positive change.

Water As A Spiritual Element
by Annie B. Bond

Water is the central source of our beings. It is part of every cell and fiber in us; it is our very essence. Could water be the common denominator that weaves us all (earth, animal, human, and plant) together as one? Is it the ultimate connector? It's awesome and humbling that water carries so many entrained messages, especially when we consider that there has been the same water, and the same amount of water, on the earth for millions of years. What messages are we receiving from our ancestors when we drink? And it is overwhelming to think that in the past 60 years alone, the human hand has imprinted so much pollution on the water, bringing it out of healthy balance. It is our spiritual obligation to be water's caretaker and cause it no further harm.

The True Nature of Health

Most people ask only from their body that it does not trouble them. Most people fe
el that they are healthy if they are not suffering from illness or pain, not aware of the imbalances that exist in their bodies and minds that ultimately will lead to disease. Yoga has a threefold impact on health. It keeps healthy people healthy, it inhibits the development of diseases, and it aids recovery from ill health.

They lived in this reality until they woke up to their infinite potential to create and inhabit magnificent worlds of love, beauty and service.

Accessing Your Spiritual Guidance For Healing

Everyone in a state of healing knows that they cannot heal without a connection with their Higher Power; yet for many, this connection is illusive. Still, it is the birthright of each of us to have a direct line to God, whatever God is for you. Yet few of us have learned how to do this, at least on a daily basis. Surprisingly however, it is not hard to do.

The Out-of-Body Experience
by David Lindsay

Numerous surveys and anecdotal studies report that people all over the world are having lucid experiences outside their physical bodies. The out-of-body experience, also known as astral travel or astral projection, is a natural phenomenon that everyone experiences nightly during sleep, although very few ever become aware of it. Despite being so little understood, it offers unrivalled potential as a vehicle for us to obtain answers to fundamental existential questions such as: what happens when we die, what is our purpose in life, and what is the meaning of existence?

Stretching Out of Depression

But when those blues turn into a seemingly never-ending tunnel of black, it may be a signal that you are suffering from depression and a nudge from the universe to look for help. The good news is that there are sources of help and relief for depression beyond designer drugs like Zoloft® or Prozac®. Many sufferers are now turning to the four thousand-year-old healing art of yoga to create a permanent shift away from the pain and suffering of depression, and towards a new life of hope, insight and good health.

Field Notes On The Compassionate Life
by Marc Ian Barasch

Life offers up its own daily catechism, even if it's just seeing people in a little better light. Why not just resolve to give everyone the benefit of the doubt? "If we treat people as they ought to be," said Goethe, almost nailing it, "we help them become what they are capable of becoming." Or more to the point: Treat them as they already are, if we but had the Good Eye to see it.

Accessing Your Higher Mind
by John Holland

The more we stay connected to our higher mind - which we also call the universe, the source, or spirit - the more we strengthen and build that crucial bridge between ourselves and our higher consciousness. While we're all born connected to this divine awareness, we have a tendency to pull away from what was once natural. It's reasonable to assume that when we become disconnected from our higher mind, the source that once nourished us will be replaced with another source or substitute. In other words, the connection could be with food, alcohol, nicotine, co-dependency to someone or even work - hence the term workaholic. Many of us spend our lives trying to fill that void which was created when the link was broken.

Why Even Bother? The Importance of Motivation
by Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D

If, from the meditative perspective, everything you are seeking is already here, even if it is difficult to wrap your thinking mind around that concept, if there really is no need to acquire anything or attain anything or improve yourself, if you are already whole and complete and by that same virtue so is the world, then why on earth bother meditating? Why would we want to cultivate mindfulness in the first place? And why use particular methods and techniques, if they are all in the service of not getting anywhere anyway, and when, moreover, I've just finished saying that methods and techniques are not the whole of it anyway?

The Steps As Sila
by Kevin Griffith

In Buddhism the initial, purifying stage of spiritual development is called sila, usually translated as morality or virtue -- what one teacher calls "cleaning up your act." This involves living an ethical life; treating others and ourselves with kindness; and letting go of destructive behaviors. In Buddhist teachings, sila is formalized in the Five Lay Precepts -- and number five is "I take the training to abstain from alcohol and drugs which make me heedless." So, guess what? The Buddha didn't think getting loaded was that good an idea either -- the Twelve Steps are, in fact, sila.

Positive Energy: How To Build Vitality And Stop Energy Vampires From Draining You
by Judith Orloff, M.D.

Adapted from Positive Energy, Harmony Books, April, 2004

I learned to honor my energy needs the hard way. As a psychiatrist who specializes in intuition I knew how important it was to listen to my body. Yet still I’d vacillate between intense weeks of speaking tours to bouts of utter exhaustion at home. I couldn’t turn down “irresistible” opportunities. Here was my dilemma--I trusted my intuition, and was committed to living by it. But I had a blind spot: Although I was quite successful at helping others at trusting intuition and leading high energy lives I was ignoring my own energy crises. Finally my fatigue was so profound I had to change.

The Subconscious Mind, Prayer and Healing

The main impediment in the way of any prayer is too much intellect and too little devotion. If we do not pray at all or pray without intensity and devotion, it is not what we consciously want to happen in our life that does happen--it is what we believe to be true of ourselves and others deep in our subconscious mind.

Using Colors And Stones With Meditation
by Keith Zang

Meditation is a very powerful tool to use for reducing and releasing the stress of the day as well as for healing and bringing enlightenment into your being. There are many methods for meditation. Some tap into mindfulness to bring the present moment into focus. Others utilize the breath to create a sense of timelessness by focusing on a single sensation or point and letting all other distractions go. This article will be focused on another type of meditation, that of the energetic healing form where the energies of the body and surrounding life force energies are focused for dynamic and accelerated healing.

Crones Don't Whine: Concentrated Wisdom For Juicy Women
An Interview With Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD

Webster's dictionary definition of a crone is "a withered old woman." Does a woman have to look like a crone to be one? Warts on nose?

This is not what being a crone is all about--at all! Another name for a crone would be "inner wise woman" or "wise and compassionate elder"--the development of which grows through life. "Crone" is ageless though she develops mostly in post-menopausal women. Crone is what a woman is in her psyche and not what she is expected to look like.

Meditation: Going Beyond Ego Barriers
by Dr. Darryl Pokea

This author views meditation and relaxation as essential to healthy survival in our painfully chaotic, often insane world. The events of 911 and continuous re-generated fear of further terrorist attacks and multi-country world conflicts can be overwhelming for even the most mature adults. A mind congested by fear can easily slip into the habit of fragmented thoughts and loss of objectivity. The mind continually chattering in response to our deepest fears may become so loud, that it drowns out the gentle, calming whispers of our Creator's Spirit.

Out Of “Control”
by Trish Whynot, D.C.Ed.

A channel named Rho once told me that relationships were about learning to honor, respect and cherish. As I explored her words of wisdom, I began to look at what I had learned about honoring, respecting and cherishing growing up. I also began observing what my clients had learned regarding honoring, respecting and cherishing themselves and others and how what we were taught had impacted our lives. The results were rather enlightening so I thought I’d share. Since growth and healing are why we are here, why not enjoy the process. Relationships can be an awesome playground for personal growth and healing when we can take our energy off of blaming and direct it toward learning, healing and understanding.

Conquering Epilepsy With Maharishi Vedic Approach To Health

Epilepsy is a tough health disorder. These of you who have it know. I was diagnosed in 1990, during my military service in the Israeli army when I began having sudden seizures, which would make my body shack violently, lose control over my bladder and leave me unconscious for hours. As a result I was dismissed from service but although the fatigue and tension associated with military life have ended, the disease kept on. My EEG, though, was normal. The CT scan revealed nothing unusual and so my doctors could not identify the cause. Seizures have come from time to time with no warning and occurred in many embarrassing locations and circumstances...

It’s A Miracle!
by Nancy Hassett Dahm

Miracles happen every day to ordinary people living ordinary lives. So why don’t we hear more about these incredible events? Perhaps people want to keep secret what is most precious and private to them. Or perhaps there is a fear of being called a zealot, and therefore not to be taken seriously. Or maybe as a society, we have “outgrown” our sensitivity to things beyond our understanding and control. Whatever the reasons for not revealing what would be considered by many to be miracles—we should reconsider and tell all. Why? We should reveal miracles in order to keep hope alive, to keep faith alive, and to keep the belief in possibilities alive.

I believe that intuition is a reliable inner resource for wisdom to guide our lives. Fortunately, everyone has it, and we are capable of developing it for practical use in everyday life as well as for discovering and achieving life goals. Learn to listen to your intuition and learn from it by tuning in to these four cues.

Find a Quiet Corner: A Simple Guide to Self-Peace
Introduction
by Nancy O'Hara

I used to wish my life away. I lived my life thinking ahead to the next thing—the next day, when I had a date with so-and-so and wouldn't that be nice; the next job, because I hated my current one so much; the next year, when I was planning to take that great vacation which held the promise of changing my life; the next prince charming, who would rescue me from my life because the last one was really a frog and I was meant to be saved.

Second Sight
The Beginnings of Wisdom
by Judith Orloff

I am large ... I contain multitudes.
-WALT WHITMAN

It was 3:00 A.M., the summer of 1968. A magical southern California night. I was sixteen years old and had spent the weekend partying at a friend's house in Santa Monica, oblivious to my exhaustion. The soft, warm Santa Anas whipped through the eucalyptus trees, blowing tumbleweeds down deserted city streets. These winds were seductive, unsettling, conveying a slight edge of danger.

A Yogini From Conception
by Portia Brockway

One afternoon before I was born, my mother and father were watching TV. They happened upon a show on which India's Prime Minister Pandit Nehru was discussing the affairs of the day with Aldous Huxley, author of Doors of Perception and father figure-to-be for the '60s counterculture. The year was 1956. The subject of yoga came up. My father had never heard of yoga before, but what Nehru and Huxley said fascinated him. He turned to my mother and asked her what yoga was. She said that she didn't know; why didn't he get a book on it?

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
by Roberta F. Lewis, M.S.W.

Does not a day go by that many of us don't wonder how we manage to juggle the pieces of our lives and honorably hold up our responsibilities to family, friends, work, our health, our financial well-being, as well as lead full and satisfying lives? It sometimes doesn't take much to unsettle the delicate balance of forces that constellate as our world, sending it off into a wobble, leaving us struggling to right the course. How do we find a way back?

A Precision-Tuned Body
by Pat Burke

We often use the term stress to refer to the negative effects of external factors such as noise, crowding, performance expectations and deadlines. Most people experience stress as something that happens to them. More accurately, stress itself is neutral, referring to pressures on an organism or system. Health, adaptation and evolution can be desirable outcomes when an organism is forced to respond to a large amount and intensity of stimulation or change. An experience that creates excitement and exhilaration in one person can cause deep anxiety and debilitating stress for another. Anytime an organism is overloaded, stress can occur, possibly followed by disease.

Yoga & Fatness
by Portia Brockway

All my life I have struggled with fatness. Baby fat, teenage fat, grownup fat. It comes and it goes. Fat itself is not so bad. It's how we torture ourselves about its pinch-ability, its rolls, the way it slows us down and makes our thighs rub or our shorts ride up. Oh, fat and the shame of it!

Meditation: Tranquility Within (An Eleven Step Exercise)
by Dr. Vicki Monroe

Meditation is one of the only tools that every human being can use to improve their life. It has been used for thousands of years by eastern cultures, yet here in the West we are just now learning and using it. Let's face it, when a body is at ease within itself, there can be no "dis-ease", no illness or unrest. Yet, when the body is tense, upset, irritated and "out of balance", thus follows illness and even death.

Breathing In Life
by Anja Heij

"And God formed figures from clay, blowed on them to breathe in life, and they became men."
This biblical story highly puzzled me when I was a child; I did not understand how grown-ups seriously could believe such a thing. It surely wouldn't work with the clay dolls I made… But then it wasn't to be taken literally. It was symbolically explaining that we are spiritual beings in a physical body, sharing God's life force and creative possibilities.

Working In The Subtle Realm Of Thought
by Asoka Selvarajah, Ph.D

The spiritual realm is the world of Causes. The manifest material world, that is so familiar to us through our senses, is the world of Effects. Thought always precedes manifestation in the material world. All that is manifest in the material world, whether in nature or man-made, was first a thought; a grand design.

Self-Healing Basics
by Cristin Snyder

All beings require equality. There must be a balance between the spiritual, emotional, and physical being. When the balance is off, we are off. We feel the repercussions through physical pain, discomfort, anxiety, anger, and depression. When we go to the doctor to seek pills for physical ailments, typically we are focusing treatment on the symptoms and not the underlying problem.

An Open Heart
by The Dalai Lama and Nicholas Vreeland

When we look at the happiness we seek and the suffering we wish to avoid, most evident are the pleasant and unpleasant feelings we have as a result of our sensory experience of the tastes, smells, textures, sounds, and forms that we perceive around us. There is, however, another level of experience. True happiness must be pursued on the mental level as well.

The Physical, Emotional And Psychological Impact Of A Successful Past-Life Regression

by Bob Olson, OfSpirit.com Editor

If you’re like me, you either don’t believe in past-life regression or you simply don’t believe that you can do it. Three years ago, I would have fallen under the category of full-blown nonbeliever. Today, after researching spiritual phenomenon for three years, I have no doubts that other people can achieve hypnotic regression to a past life; I just don’t believe I can do it. At least that was my story until recently, after experiencing a successful past-life regression of my own.

Gaia In Our Hearts
by Susan Meeker-Lowry

As far back as Paleolithic times ancient peoples fashioned clay and stone images of the Great Mother, images with voluptuous breasts and thighs and the protruding belly of a woman who has given birth many times. Her face is often featureless and her head tiny, but her body is full and soft, the essence of fertility and nurturance. Over the course of time the Great Mother was honored and worshipped by virtually every culture.

How The Light Wins Every Battle For You
by Guy Finley

The true spiritual battle occurs in the "dark" of us, a contest between the light of our wish to be better than the bitterness in us, or higher than some heartache or hatred dragging us down. Whatever its nature, this struggle is between forces that are dark and denying and those light and affirming. The ground fought upon is for possession of our interior; to the victor go the spoils.
