A
Journey In Song

Almost eight years ago, now, I was sitting in my cubicle at Boston College
(where I had been working as a secretary for 3 years) preparing to seal an
envelope with my application to graduate school. I was at a point in my
life when I was beginning to think there had to be more to life than
getting up, going to a job, going home, going to sleep, only to start all
over again the next day. I was thinking I should take advantage of one of
my employee benefits--free tuition. My plan was to get my masters in
Elementary Education, a natural follow-up to my undergraduate degree in
the same area of study. Why not? It was "free"; it was a natural
progression; my father would be proud of me; it was the "normal"
thing to do. Yet I had never taught children in a classroom; I didn’t
even have the desire to do so. So why was I planning to spend more years
in school to learn better ways to do something I didn’t want to do?
As I sat there contemplating my future, I must have looked quite confused.
Donna, my next-door cubicle buddy, leaned over the wall and said,
"What’s your hesitation?" After I shared my thoughts with her,
she asked me a question that was to change the course of my life --
"What do you love to do more than anything?" My
instantaneous response was "I love to sing! But how can I sustain
myself in this world by singing? The competition is immense." Donna
reached into her purse and pulled out a brochure. A friend of hers was the
founder of "The SpiritSong™ Institute" in Lincoln, MA.
She also gave me a tape of music call "Mystic Soul" by recording
artists Shawna Carol and Mary Elizabeth Wheeler who were the founders of
the institute. I played it in my car on the way home. The music changed my
life then and there. I tore up the application for grad school and
embarked on a journey that has been rich and fulfilling beyond anything I
could have imagined.
The Open House
On a warm autumn evening, I walked down the lane off of Page Road in
Lincoln toward the house in the woods that would lead me to places inside
my body I had long ignored, stirring emotions I previously thought were
buried and gone. I was nervous being here, not knowing a soul, taking a
chance to do this on my own without a friend to join me in the adventure.
I walked in the door and immediately smelled the sweet odors of burning
white sage and brewing herbal tea. I felt comforted and safe.
I poured myself a cup of tea and proceeded into the Song Room--a huge
former dance studio, carpeted with a cathedral high ceiling, and one
complete wall of glass looking into the woods. Back-jacks were arranged in
a perfect circle around a centerpiece of sacred objects, roses and a
single white candle. A woodstove warmed the cavernous room. Crystals and
other sacred objects adorned the shelves lining the room. The soothing
music of Enya permeated the air.
Peace. I had arrived home. I didn’t know what was in store for the
evening, but I KNEW then and there, I would be okay.
That evening the leaders taught us numerous chants and simple songs,
encouraging us to sing out, experiment with harmony, and have fun. They
led us through several breathing and singing exercises, and a group tone
jam (where everyone sings all at once--freestyle). Then after a short
break, I was introduced to the SpiritSong™ process, a process that is
difficult to describe with words--it really can only be experienced to
understand it.
But to describe the process technically, when a person spirit sings, they
sing without words (similar to toning, but with even more freedom),
breathing in slowly through the nose in between each string of notes with
the intention of listening closely to one’s body and inner world, and
then proceeding to the next group of tones, whatever they might be,
through the very next breath. Singers are encouraged to sing from the
body, heart and soul, letting go of the mind, not thinking about what to
sing next, instead feeling what comes next and allowing whatever IS to be
right.
My spirit song that evening was shaky, to say the least. I had some fear,
but again I had an unmistakable feeling of safety. The leaders came to the
center of the circle with me and supported me in my first song. I
closed my eyes, breathed in through my nose, and made a shaky sound on my
out breath. I breathed again and made more sound, more confident this time
that I wouldn’t pass out. My third string of notes was stronger, yet my
mind was telling me I should sound as pretty as possible, because after
all I had shared in the introductions that I was a singer all my life. So
I’d better sound like a singer. But Mary Elizabeth said in my ear
"It’s okay to sound NOT pretty." Woah! A new
concept. So I sang my spirit song, in the center of a circle of people who
just sat politely and listened. When I opened my eyes at the end, I was
amazed they were all still there. They hadn’t run out the door, they
were smiling and thanking me for giving them the gift of my spirit song!
Something in me shifted--I, who had felt invisible and unheard all my life
in my family of origin, was being seen and heard in a new way, in a safe
and accepting way. I loved it! I signed up for an 8-week class so I could
be heard some more. I signed up for another class after that, then a
weekend intensive. A year later I signed up for the Teacher Training; and
now, 8 years later, I am teaching others this incredible process.
I’ve been privileged to hear hundreds of different voices singing
joyously, angrily, sadly, spiritually, softly, even raucously. Each song
enters me and joins my own continuously growing and changing song.
Not long after that day at Boston College, I left full-time employment for
good, jumping off the corporate ladder into the unknown. Today I have my
own home with a wonderful big room overlooking a magical lake. Many people
come to share their spirit songs with me now and as I look back over the
years in awe and wonder, I know in my heart that I could never have
arrived at this place without first listening to my spirit that day at BC.
"I love to sing." And so I sing.
Today, my mission is to help change the beliefs the majority of Americans
have about singing. My experience in speaking with many, many people on a
daily basis about singing is that most of them really believe they cannot
sing. Some sample comments are "I was told by a nun in grammar school
that I shouldn’t sing."; "My brother is the singer in the
family, not me."; "I am tone deaf."; "I used to sing
in the chorus, but the leader told me to just mouth the words."
These are but a few of the numerous reasons people do not sing. Yet nearly
every one of these people admits to singing in the shower or in the car,
with the radio or without. So it’s not that they don’t sing -- it’s
more that they don’t want to be heard by others.
If you are reading this article and have reached this paragraph, your
voice is calling to you to let it out of hiding. All you need to do is
breathe and tone on "ahh", "eeee", "oooo"
– any vowel sound. Do it alone if you wish; but the real power of spirit
singing is experienced when you are heard by loving, non-judgmental
witnesses. Sharing your song can change your life – it has absolutely
changed mine!
