Candida albicans is a type of yeast-like
fungus or parasite that inhabits the intestine, genital tract, mouth and
throat. Normally this fungus lives in healthy balance with the other
bacteria and yeasts in the body. Predisposing factors such as the
prolonged or repeated use of antibiotics, steroid drugs, anti-cancer
drugs, or birth control pills, and conditions such as diabetes or
menopause as well as the overall state of your health can disturb this
balance. These conditions cause the fungus to multiply, weakening the
immune system.
Candida travels through the bloodstream to
many parts of the body, the most common being the ears, nose,
gastro-intestinal tract, and bowels. This can cause all kinds of symptoms
and illnesses including constipation, diarrhea, colitis, abdominal pain,
canker sores, persistent heart burn, muscle and joint pain, sore throat,
congestion, nagging cough, numb hands and feet or face, tingling
sensations, acne, vaginitis, and adrenal problems.
Many physicians have been reluctant to
accept Candida as a widespread cause of disease. Dr. Crock, author of The
Yeast Connection points out that it has been established that fulminating
Candida produces a toxin which has dire effects on the body organs. He
feels that we need to gain the knowledge of how to deal with Candida.
Diet change is the first place to start for
Candida treatment. The main foods to avoid are sugars, bread with yeast
and white flours, dairy, and all cheeses, fermented foods, fruits,
mushrooms, all dry roasted nuts, potato chips, pretzels, crackers, and
pork foods like bacon and lunch meat.
Since the use of antibiotics is the main
course of yeast infections, using natural antibiotics (like echinacea) may
be a healthier alternative. If you must take an antibiotic, you should
replace the loss of friendly bacteria with an acidophilus supplement,
starting the day you begin the antibiotic.
Parasite cleansing, cleansing of the blood
and lower bowels, and improving digestion and liver functions will also
reduce the risk of Candida infections. Strengthen your immune system by
using herbs, natural vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other necessary
daily supplements.
