Finding
Your Voice

Are there times when you sit at the computer mentally willing the words to
appear? Instead a blank page would return the glare. Words would elude
your thoughts. Your mind is filled with characters and story lines, where
do you begin your children fiction article?
There are many articles and books written that offer advice on how to get
started. With all this advice I still can’t find one to suit my
needs. The best offer that I can suggest is do it the way that makes
you feel comfortable. If that means writing it in a notebook, or on
pieces of paper that you pick up during the day then write. You can
organize it a little later. I use what others may consider old
fashioned, but it’s much easier for me to let the ides flow from the pen
to the paper.
Writing gives you a voice, sit back, and let it happen. Drop your guard as
the characters take on a life of their own.
Like I said before everyone has their own way of creating articles. You
need to find the best one that’s suited for you I have my own. I just
write and write. If you break it down it looks something like this:
1. Blueprint
2. Characters Speak
3. Jigsaw Puzzle
4. Final Touch
In the beginning just write. Don’t inhibit yourself. Don’t stop to
make the corrections. Allow your thoughts to flow on the paper. Don’t
even worry about how much you should write. If it’s fifteen pages in one
day or one paragraphs in fifteen minutes that’s enough. Write however
long is comfortable for you. Once you put your creative ideas on paper,
your blueprint for the article has begun.
The next step is easy; your characters develop a voice. Once their
voice begins to speak the article take on a whole new life. Basically you
need to stand a side while the words hit the paper. When I’m in this
state of creativity I find myself allowing the characters to speak for
themselves.
This happened to me while writing “A Second Chance.” Halfway during
the article, the main character, Jason jumped in to take over the
narration. He related his feelings to paper. One moment I am sitting in
the van creating the next scene then he enters, taking it over. It was a
remarkable experience.
The dialog between the characters is instrumental in developing the story.
Now it’s time to put the jigsaw puzzle together, this is where you tie
up all the loose ends. Connect the appropriate scenes. Cross your T’s
and dot you I’s. The story will flow like a stream from beginning to
end. Your characters have a beginning, middle and hopefully a successful
ending.
You need to let it cool down for awhile before putting the final touch on
it. Normally I let sit for a week or two because the article is hot off
the presses. Between writing and rewriting there was a lot of time and
energy put in to it.
After a few weeks go over it with a critical, editorial eye. Make any
necessary changes that are needed; deleting unnecessary words or phrases.
If the article runs smoothly and sounds good then it is ready to be sent
out to a publisher.
In order for the story to come to life the most important thing to
remember is to relax the control. Most of us from the start want to make
corrections or immediately change things around. I’m no exception.
Try not to do that because it can hinder your creative flow.
Sit back and relax the words will come. Whichever way that you decide to
create children articles, write or do an outline. Write how you know how
to write.
