Messenger
by Deborah Haggerty
You came and changed my cells.
You requested my attention.
I did not hear you.
You demanded my attention.
I heard you then.
They told me to fight you.
I said you were not my enemy.
You were my messenger.
I would not fight you.
I would try to understand the message.
I asked you why you came.
You said you needed me to forgive.
You said you needed me to let go.
I asked for help. I was given love.
I asked for hope. I was given joy.
I asked for courage. I was given this day.
You said that I must give to receive.
I gave my breasts.
I said goodbye to you.
You left me with an open heart.
I don't need you anymore.
Not in my body.
The message is in my heart.
In August of 2005, I was diagnosed with bilateral breast cancer. Intuitively, I was very aware that the treatment of my
dis-ease would need to be done on a much deeper and wider scope. Yes, my body needed to be treated yet, my healing needed to be done mentally, emotionally and spiritually as well. In this poem, I wanted to express this awareness and my understanding that the cancer was not something that I needed to 'do battle with' but it was something that I needed to listen to and find it's message and gift. I had to love my body and release what it didn't need anymore.

For me, journaling and writing poetry have been a significant part of my healing. About a year ago, I discovered the medium of blogging. I have enjoyed the interaction and have met some wonderful and interesting people from all over the world. I have found a community to share with uninhibitedly, and in some ways, this community assists in my healing. I have not imposed any boundaries on my journal. It is a compilation of my own work as well as others work, including music and photography. If it moves me in some way, I find a place for it.
